Oh I could explain though, you heard of ghosts and monsters and demons, right? You do probably, but in East-Asia like China and Japan they have just an other name for them, they and their creatures "seen by humans" look different too. If they really exist is something else, but you know the nine tailed fox of Naruto and the Ninetails of Pokemon, they're both just foxes originated from a youkai looking like a fox with nine tails or more/less. I don't know it's name though but Kyuubi would be reasonable. Anyway they're just mystic creatures that cannot be seen by anyone unless they show themselves just like you have methods to talk with ghosts. Dragons are originally youkai as well. Youkai are Japanese folklore creatures. Some of the most common ones are the kitsune, the nine-tailed fox,(which resembles ninetails greatly XD) and the bakeneko, a fork-tailed cat(which espeon is based on)
